Athlete's foot is a very common skin infection that affects people of all ages but mostly men and young people are more prone to this this infection. Burning sensation between toes, itching, redness, scaling, blistering are some common symptoms of Athlete's foot.
Athlete's foot is caused by a fungus called tinea pedis that attacks the area between toes, soles of feet fingernails and toenails. Dark,warm and moist places provide a perfect environment for such fungus to grow faster. However you can kill this skin fungus simply by following some Home remedies which are given below:

1. Vinegar

Vinegar is considered very effective to treat athlete's foot. Vinegar is highly acidic and very successfully kills the fungi.Apply it by either soaking cotton pads in it and then on the skin, or by soaking your skin in water tub to which you have added 2 cups of white Vinegar. Soak your skin for 30-45 minutes and then pat dry.

2. Tea Tree Oil

Tea Tree Oil helps a lot to treat Athlete's foot. Take a cotton pad and dip in Tea Tree oil.Gently apply on all areas affected by the infection. Let it dry off. Tea tree oil is recognized as a strong antiseptic that prevents and stops the infection. It acts as a powerful anti fungal agent, that stops the growth of fungi.

3. Bleach

Mix 1/2 cup of Household Bleach(Clorox bleach) into a gallon of water. Soak your feet into mixture for 15 minutes twice a day.

4. Baking Soda

Baking soda is a base that returns the pH affected by ringworm to normal, thus killing the fungi.You can use baking soda in 3 ways to kill fungi.


  • (i)First by mixing baking soda and some distilled water until you get a paste-like consistency. Spread it on the skin, let it dry off and then rinse off after 30 minutes.
  • (ii)Add some more liquid so you can dip cotton balls or cotton pads in it and apply it on the skin.
  • (iii)You could also soak your infected foot in water to which you have added a cup of baking soda. Soak you foot for few minutes and then pat dry.

5. Garlic (Lehsan)

Garlic(Lehsan) also helps a lot to kill fungus. Cut up fresh slices of garlic. Put inside of shoes and wear them. you can also apply garlic paste or garlic juice on affected areas to kill fungus.

6.Yogurt

Plain yogurt containing live acidophilus bacteria is an instant remedy for athlete’s foot. These friendly microorganisms keep the fungus in check. Simply apply the plain yogurt on the infected areas, let dry, and rinse off after few minutes.

7. Black Tea

Tea contains tannic acid, a natural astringent that works wonderfully to dry out sweaty feet and helps to kill fungus. Steep five tea bags in a liter of boiling water for five minutes. Let cool to lukewarm, then soak the infected foot in this solution for 30 minutes.

Some Preventions and Useful Tips

  • (i) Keep your feet as dry as you can. After regular bath use a hair dryer to completely dry your feet and give special attention between toes.
  • (ii) Don't wear socks or shoes with damp feet because damp and warm environment is a perfect place for fungus to grow faster.
  • (iii) Always wear good quality sock, cotton ones are the best as the cotton allows the skin to "breathe" better.
  • (iv) If you notice the symptoms getting worse or you develop bleeding, swelling or puss from cracks in the skin, don't rely only on above remedies, instead call your doctor or visit a podiatrist as soon as possible.
